Commerce Construction Co., L.P. To Build New Student Housing At Azusa Pacific University

Project Will Bring Much-Needed Five-Story, 175-Room Residence Hall to Campus

AZUSA, Calif. (May 8, 2002)-Azusa Pacific University (APU) announced the selection of City of Industry, Calif.-based Commerce Construction Co., L.P. to build a new five-story, 175-room residence hall in the heart of the college campus.

Commerce Construction beat out two other finalists for the $10 million design-build contract. Construction is scheduled to begin in July and completion is expected by June 2003.

"This new residence facility will be ready in time to welcome students for fall 2003," said Terry Franson, Ph.D., APU vice president for student life and dean of students. "A cooperative effort between students and staff led to the development of a design that enhances campus community and meets a pressing need for additional housing."

John Burroughs, Executive Vice President of Commerce Construction, said the university’s construction and operational planning group is working closely with the builder. The perimeter walls of the new structure will utilize an Insulated Concrete Forming System (ICFS) that will help maximize energy efficiency and also allow for a speedier construction process than traditional methods.

Commerce Construction will be the primary architect on the project, Burroughs said. Fisher Friedman Associates of Emeryville, CA, the leading dormitory design firm on the West Coast, will serve as the executive architect and design consultant.

"We believe the staff and students of APU will be pleased with the design of this new residence hall, especially with the information technology we will incorporate into the building," Burroughs said.
